The Bermuda Festival offering Shakespeare's `As You Like It'

Shakespeare receives an airing at this year's Festival in the form of one of his best-loved comedies.

"As You Like It'', a pastoral play, written in 1598 and set in the mythical Forest of Arden is unalloyed romantic comedy, interspersed with some of Shakespeare's most memorable songs. The themes, however, are as meaty as one would expect from the great dramatist, in this case, contrasting court sophistication with that of rural simplicity, and exploring the extent to which myth is reality and reality is myth.

New York-based, but primarily a touring group, The Acting Company was created in 1972 out of the first graduating class of the Juillard School's Drama Division. Under the directorship of Margot Harley and the late John Houseman, the company -- the only one of its kind in the US -- has achieved a unique reputation in America for the presentation of classical and contemporary plays.

. Unlike in the UK, where there is a strong tradition of both repertory and subsidised state theatre, this company became something of a theatrical pioneer in providing both an invaluable training ground for young performers but also in taking first-rate productions all around America.

. Very much a celebrant of the glories of the English language, The Acting Company presents many of Shakespeare's works (last year, it was a much-admired production of "Othello''). Altogether, its repertoire of 71 plays has travelled to 47 States in America. The company has toured Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Australia and in 1985, made its debut at the world-famous Old Vic Theatre in London.

The not-for-profit company, which has won several awards, has nurtured many stars, among them Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, Keith David, Frances Conroy and David Ogden Stiers.

"As You Like It'' will be presented at City Hall Theatre on February 5, 6, 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. A limited number of tickets are still available.
