Wellman beats Olympic champion in Brussels
champion Kenny Harrison of the United States last night.
But unfortunately for the Bermudian, world record holder Jonathan Edwards was again in winning mood as Cuba's Yoelvis Quesada and Wellman had to settle for second and third respectively at the lucrative Van Damme Memorial Track Meet in Brussels, Belgium.
Edwards won the event with a leap of 17.50 metres. Quesada, the Olympic bronze medallist, was second with a jump of 17.29 while Wellman was third with 17.05.
Harrison had to make do with fourth place after a best leap of 16.97.
This was the fourth meet in Europe for Wellman since the Olympics. A week ago in a Grand Prix event in Switzerland he placed eighth with a jump of 16.29 as Edwards won with 17.79 followed by Harrison in 17.23 and Quesada in 16.84.
Meanwhile, at the same meet last night, Morocco's Salah Hissou broke the world 10,000 metres record, Russia's Svetlana Masterkova set a new women's 1,000 mark, and 110-metres hurdles champion Allen Johnson came within one hundredth of a second of another record.
Hissou clocked 26 minutes, 38.08 seconds to shave 5.45 seconds off the 10,000 record set by Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie in June, 1995.
The Moroccan raced away from the field in the last 1,500 metres and finished well ahead of Kenya's Paul Tergat, 12.33 seconds behind.
Masterkova, the Olympic 800 and 1,500 metres gold medallist who also set the 1,500 world mark in Zurich nine days ago, clocked two minutes, 28.98 seconds in the seldom run 1,000 metres.
