Hood made to pay for missed chances
Six goals, two penalty misses and three sendings-off highlighted this all-action FA Cup clash at White Hill Field yesterday.
And by the time the dust had settled Forties had made sure of their spot in the first round.
It might have been different, though, had Robin Hood taken their early chances which included two from Simon Turner, one which brought off a save and the other which was headed wide of an open net.
Hood's first of two penalty misses came in the 18th minute when Alan Mooney's spot kick was saved by Kevin Poole in the Forties goal. Derek Scott was adjudged to have fouled Dominic Critchley as both chased a ball in the box.
Forties took the lead in the 24th minute when Adrian Munnery scored with a hard drive and Scott made it 2-0 in the 34th minute with a left-footed free kick from deep on the right with went straight into goal at the far post with 'keeper Graham Pithethly beaten.
Andy Robinson laid on Forties' third goal when he crossed from the right and sub Keith Fenn beat the 'keeper with a header low into the corner.
Another sub, Jens Diengleman, pulled one back for Robin Hood in the 62nd minute but Forties quickly restored their three-goal lead when Robinson netted five minutes later.
Three players were ejected in the space of eight minutes late in the game as Ronnie Simmons reacted to a tackle from Alex McLaughlin by striking his opponent. Both were sent off by referee Billy Fox. Scott was to follow soon after for a second bookable offence, having been cautioned in the first half for a foul.
Hood missed another penalty in the 80th minute when Kevin Thomsett had his spot kick saved by Poole but five minutes later they finally scored again through Turner.
