Cancer research handed an Ace!
donations this year to sponsor the construction of a new cancer research library.
ACE chairman and chief executive Brian Duperreault presented Judy Simons of the TB, Cancer and Health Association with a cheque for $23,200 yesterday.
Ms. Simons, T.B. Cancer and Health Chairperson, said the money has been allocated for a new cancer research library.
"This money will go to a different form of research. The library is going to have an Internet section, a video section and literature section -- plus a clerical nurse on staff.'' She said families of those affected needed to be aware of what their loved ones are experiencing.
"Not just for breast cancer, but cancer in general,'' she said. "They need to know exactly what their loved ones are going through.
"I am always amazed to what corporate sponsorship does -- ACE has always been a great supporter.'' Breast cancer survivor Sharon Pitcher said donations like this were getting the information out, while research is advancing as well.
"I've been a survivor for the past four years -- and not many years ago we didn't know what to do,'' she added. "The further research will be able to save more and more lives but you still have to be responsible.'' Ms Pitcher urged those affected by cancer to take it upon themselves to find out more.
Mr. Duperreault also experienced the fight against cancer, saying his mother is a breast cancer survivor.
The fundraising was launched when Mr. Duperreault became the Spirit Life Awardee for Insurance Council in the US.
Each year, the Awardee chairs a fundraising committee that raises money for the City of Hope cancer research facility in California.
At the start of this campaign, Mr. Duperreault allocated 25 percent of all funds raised in Bermuda to the TB, Cancer and Health Association.
He said: "During the year 2000, ACE spearheaded a fund raising campaign that raised $4.1 million. This broke all previous records on behalf of the City of Hope.''
