Anglicans kicks off Faith Venture

Faith Venture committee chairman the Rev. Nicholas Dill shows off the blue Pembroke Faith Venture T-shirt.

The Anglican Church of Bermuda will transform King's Square, St. George's into a concert stage next Sunday, May 31 when its Faith Venture 2009 mission kicks off.

The high light ofd the day will come when the Rt. Rev. Patrick White, Bishop of Bermuda, presents a gift to the Island.

The historic square will be a sea of vibrant colour as congregations from each of the Island's nine parishes turn out in their designated parish colours to celebrate at the open air community concert, according to a press release. The event is free and all are invited.

"Although we are a church, this will not be a church service," said Faith Venture 2009 Committee Chairman, Rev. Nicholas Dill.

"We want the entire country to come to the East End and enjoy this free concert which will feature a mass male choir, a mass band (including the Somerset Brigade Band and North Village Band), the Berkeley Institute Dance Troupe, Prospect Primary boys choral speakers, Paget Primary Steel Band, St. John's Youth Choir, the Pembroke Community Terpsichorean dancers, United Dance Productions and a local must – Place's New Generation Gombeys."

Organisers of the event will provide about 350 seats and are hoping to pack the square.

"We would encourage people to bring their own chairs and items to make themselves comfortable to enjoy the concert," said Faith Venture 2009 committee member Valerie Dill.

" Performing groups represent a wide cross section of our community and that was intentional," said Ms Dill

"Many, if not all of the groups involved have been associated with the Anglican Church in their history at one time."

In addition to singing and dancing there will be three readings from history as they relate to the Anglican Church in Bermuda.

The afternoon will culminate with a gift to Bermuda.

The gift will be presented to representatives of various sectors of the community, and next month will be available for every household.

"The Anglican Church arrived in Bermuda with the first settlers and has always been part of the fabric of the country," said Rev. Dill.

"The 400th anniversary of Bermuda as a settlement means that it is also the 400th anniversary of the Anglican Church here.

"We recognise conditions were not always optimal but we are committed to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ in this generation and being a place of reconciliation and healing with God and each other" he added.

"This event is just the first of other activities held later in the year, culminating in a visit by Dr. John Sentamu, The Most Revd and Rt Hon The Lord Archbishop of York. in October."

The free open-air community concert from 3-7 p.m.
