Magistrate told him a total driving ban was mandatory for the charge.

Elroy Dill told Senior Magistrate Will Francis he would do his best to pay a $450 fine by the end of November, after he admitted driving on July 29 while impaired.

Crown counsel Charmaine Smith said Dill, 45, of East Gate Lane, was questioned by Police on St. John's Road, after he collided with a private car while riding a motorcycle.

Officers noted Dill's eyes were glazed, his breath smelled strongly of alcohol, and he appeared nervous.

Mrs. Smith told Mr. Francis that Dill submitted to a breath test in which he was found to have 227 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Yesterday Dill told Mr. Francis: "It was stupid. It was Cup Match and I'd like to say I'm sorry. I'm a truck driver at C-Mart. Is there a way I could keep my truck licence?'' Mr. Francis told Dill he had no discretion in sentencing him, saying: "There's nothing I can do about it Mr. Dill. The lawmakers regard this so seriously they say I have to take everything from you. You were way over the limit.'' Mr. Francis added: "The objective for the law is to make everybody who knows they have been drinking find another form of transport to avoid all these broken bones and worse on the roads that happen every day.'' In the end, Dill shrugged and said: "I won't have a job. I'll see what I can do (about paying the fine).''
