Customs declare end to dispute

A story in the June 18th edition of The Royal Gazette incorrectly stated that a 27-year-old Sandys Parish woman was going for a walk around 10.30 p.m. on June 16 when a man tried to grab her knapsack. The woman was walking home after getting off a bus.

Customs chiefs have said an industrial dispute by 14 Airport-based staff is now over.

Acting Collector Fostine DeSilva said bosses had met with the group of officers to discuss their concerns about staff shortages.

She said: "We have met with the staff. There have been some concerns about management skills and lack of communication with them.

"We are now in the process of hiring four additional temporary staff.'' Mrs.

DeSilva said the staff, at clerical and trainee customs officer level, would be deployed at the Airport. "That's where the heaviest demand is at the moment,'' she added.

The staff called in sick to miss one shift at the Airport last week.

WOMAN `CRITICAL' AFTER CYCLE ACCIDENT AC Woman `critical' after cycle accident A mother of two is fighting for her life after an horrific accident in Southampton.

The 42-year-old woman was riding a livery cycle on Middle Road, Southampton, last Thursday afternoon when her vehicle was in collision with a truck.

The crash victim was taken to the intensive care unit of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital suffering from head and facial injuries. Last night her condition was described as stable but critical. The driver of the truck is not thought to have been injured in the accident.

Although the accident happened a week ago Police have only now released details about the smash. Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact Police on 295 0011.

POLICE PROBE ALLEGED SEXUAL ASSAULT CRM Police probe alleged sexual assault Police are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a 22-year-old Devonshire woman.

Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said the alleged incident took place on Corkscrew Hill in Devonshire on Tuesday evening.

The victim told Police that shortly before 11 p.m. she was walking with the offender, who is known to her, when he beat her and sexually assaulted her.

The woman attended King Edward VII Memorial Hospital to obtain treatment for cuts and abrasions. A 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

WOMAN, 27, BEATS OFF WOULD-BE ROBBER CRM Woman, 27, beats off would-be robber A 27-year-old Sandy's woman managed to fend off a would-be robber who pounced on her as she went for a walk.

Police spokesperson P.c. Gary Venning said the attempted robbery took place on Cambridge Road in Sandys around 10.30 p.m. Tuesday.

The woman was walking north on Cambridge Road, near Acacia Lane, when a man came out of the trees and grabbed her knapsack. She managed to hang on to the bag and break free from the culprit who then fled empty handed.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, in particular a cyclist who is believed to have ridden by at the time, should contact Somerset CID at 234-1010.

CLUB HOLDING WORKSHOP FOR BLACK FATHERS CLB Club holding workshop for black fathers Boulevard Community Club are holding a "Black Men and Fatherhood'' workshop at the BPSA auditorium on Hamilton's Angle Street tonight.

Club President Lou Matthews said speakers at the public forum would include Rev. Dr. Vernon Lambe, Randy Horton, Rodney Smith and Wayne Caines.

The mediator for the 7 p.m. event will be Jerry Robinson, of CedarBridge Academy.

Mr. Matthews said admission was free.

BOY, 12, DETAINED FOR ALLEGED SHOPLIFTING CRM Boy, 12, detained for alleged shoplifting A 12-year-old Smith's boy was detained by Police after allegedly trying to shoplift from a Hamilton store.

Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said staff at the Phoenix Store on Reid Street spotted the youngster apparently picking up candies and hiding them in his clothing Tuesday afternoon.

He was bailed into the custody of his parents.
