Church organ fund gets boost from opera star

The Metropolitan Opera Competition winner for 1989, Kevin Short and one of America's most brilliant vocal coaches, Sylvia Olden Lee will take to the stage on October 20.

Mr. Short (bass) has performed with the Metropolitian Opera, New York City Opera and the Frankfurt Opera in addition to companies in Italy, Washington and Philadelphia.

His symphonic engagements include shows with orchestra's in Japan, the Radio France Orchestra and the National Symphony.

Ms Lee, who will accompany Mr. Short, was the first African American to join the musical staff of the Metropolitan Opera.

During her career, which spans more than 50 years, Ms Lee has performed with such great singers as William Warfield, Paul Robeson and Kathleen Battle.

She has been honoured by the United Nations, the National Women's Hall of Fame and the Mayor of Philadelphia for her contributions to the music world.

Ms Lee is now a vocal coach at the Curtis School of Music and Howard University.

Mr. Short received part of his training at the Julliard School of Music.

The Organ Committee of Christ Church, Devonshire organised the 8 p.m. show, which will be hosted under the distinguished patronage of Anglican Bishop Ewen Ratteray.
