Canon Nisbett honoured
the Southampton Princess.
Canon Nisbett was the senior canon of the Anglican Church until his recent retirement and the banquet will pay tribute to his years of service.
During his years in the pulpit he was bestowed with numerous accolades, including being the first recipient of a local anti-racism award.
The National Association for Reconciliation, at its first annual Reconciliation Awards banquet in 1993, acknowledged the work of Canon Nisbett in trying to stamp out race discrimination.
He won the individual award for his active role with the local anti-apartheid movement.
"He took leadership in the anti-apartheid movement when it was extremely unpopular to do so,'' Dr. Hodgson said at the time the award was bestowed.
"He exhibited the quiet and gentle nature which is a very positive factor in attempting to address controversial issues like racism.'' Canon Nisbett also chaired Amnesty International's and the World's Council of Churches' "Beyond the Barriers'' programme which is intended to be a community-wide effort addressing all forms of discrimination.
The vestry and members of Christ Church Devonshire will host the banquet honouring Canon Nisbett at the Southampton Princess Hotel's Atlantic Room on April 26 at 7 p.m.
The $60 tickets are available from the church wardens. For more information call Elaine Wade at 292-2820 or Glenn Fox at 292-4747.
