Gibbons tops batting as Bermuda get first win on Barbados tour
Veteran allrounder Noel Gibbons led Bermuda to its first win on the five match tour of Barbados yesterday when he stroked an unbeaten 73 to give them a two wicket triumph over local club Police.
Scores: Police 164-8 (40 overs), Bermuda 166-8 (39.3 overs).
The match was reduced to 40 overs each side after a morning shower and Police, the 1991 limited overs champions and 1992 runners up, were restricted by some tight bowling by openers Anthony (Pacer) Edwards who claimed one-for-12 from seven overs and Dale Fox who took a wicket in his six overs and gave up 22 runs.
Spinner Arnold Manders was the pick of the Bermuda bowlers with two-for-18 from four overs while Del Hollis, the other Bermuda spinner, claimed two-for-52 from his allotted 10 overs. Gibbons, the first change, also bowled 10 overs and finished with one-for-46 while the other bowler used, Clevie Wade, was one-for-eight from three overs.
Middle-order batsmen Stanton Proverbs, Derwin Thompson and Jeffrey Mapp all got in the 30s for Police to lead their chase for a respectable total. Number four bat Proverbs scored 33, Thompson 30 and number seven batsman Mapp 35 not out.
Bermuda, who lost to Maple Hill by 20 runs when chasing a bigger target in their tour opener on Saturday, had a slow start in their chase for the runs with openers Ricky Hill and Dennis Archer both scoring 12.
Captain Albert Steede, batting in his usual number three position, steadied things with a knock of 28 after Arnold Manders had also gone cheaply, for seven.
The 37-year old Gibbons, batting at number five, proved to be the main obstacle for the Bajans as he carried Bermuda to victory with the team's best knock of the tour so far, as wickets fell cheaply around him in the middle and late order.
Jeff Richardson went for seven, Allan Douglas for 10, Clevie Wade for nought and Del Hollis for two before Edwards finished with three not out as the match was won with three balls to spare.
Kenny Marshall, the top wicket-taker in Barbados two years ago, finished with four wickets.
Bermuda have now won one match and lost one. Today they will be involved in net sessions at Kensington Oval under the direction of former West Indies batsmen Sir Gary Sobers and Gordon Greenidge.
Tomorrow Bermuda play the Barbados under 19s in a 50 overs match and two of the players expected to see action for the first time are youngsters Gary Williams and Jermaine Outerbridge.
Another net session is scheduled for Friday at Kensington Oval before Bermuda close out the tour with matches against St. Catherine and the Barbados national team on Saturday and Sunday.
