Zebras seek to earn their Cup stripes

Few teams can match the record of PHC Zebras in the FA Cup but the perennial powerhouses of the competition will face expulsion in the first round if they fall to Dandy Town in tomorrow's feature clash at St. John's field (2.30p.m.).

But while the Zebras enter the contest inspired by their 3-0 victory over Wolves in their last Premier Division game at Somerset last Sunday, Town and coach Andrew Bascome have lots of pressure on their shoulders, since defeat will see them being knocked out of a major competition twice within the span of five days - the Hornets were beaten by North Village on penalties in Wednesday night's Martonmere Cup clash at Devonshire Rec.

"We certainly don't want to go out like that in two straight competitions, the FA Cup is a must win situation and we will be playing hard, giving it 100 percent and hope that we are successful. In Wednesday's game were struggling to get our rhythm,'' said Bascome.

"PHC have a good history in the FA Cup and naturally we expect them to be tough, but we are not down after our loss to Village. We had seven or eight injuries but we can't complain about them. I was pleased with our performance and we have to move on.''

While that lone match-up of Premier Division sides is the main attraction of the day, there are many other games that may produce close results.

Southampton Rangers, struck by many departures this season, make their debut and will be hard pressed to get over lowly Premier Division side St. George's Colts who are looking for an easy match to lift their spirits after suffering two league defeats at home this season.

The east enders are favoured to get over Rangers at Southampton Oval, but new coach Ronue Cann will be hoping that his team will rise to the occasion and produce the upset.

The only other game in the draw that featured a Premier Division side, Vasco Mariners and Somerset Trojans, was originally postponed because the facilities at BAA were affected by Thursday's storm. However, that game is now at Somerset with a 2.30 p.m. kick-off.

An all First Division clash that promises to be closely contested is the one at Lord's between Hamilton Parish and Eagles while First Division Ireland Rangers host Commercial League Pest Control at Malabar.

The remaining two matches feature MR Onions and Key West Rangers at White Hill while at Police field Prospect Fire host Prison Officers.
