Much-hyped clash fails to meet expectations
Dandy Town 0 Somerset 0
This eagerly awaited Premier Division fixture failed to live up to expectations at St. John's Field last night with a share of the points probably more than either team deserved.
Twice-delayed because of light problems, both teams were anxious to get their first win in the league, but for 90 minutes it seldom looked like happening as both teams were lacking in the scoring department.
The closest either came to finding the net was in the 11th minute when Somerset's captain and key striker Dwight Basden saw a shot come back off the post. Otherwise there were few clear cut chances as neither Jason Smith in the Town goal nor Somerset's 'keeper Timmy Figureido were troubled.
On the half hour Marvin Belboda of Somerset saw a cross from the left go untouched across the face of the goal and a minute later at the other end the same thing happened for Town when Darron Simons' cross from the left missed everybody in front of goal.
The second half failed to bring about a change in fortunes for either team as the crowd waited patiently for a bit of magic to break the deadlock. Despite the teams' recent wins in the FA Cup - Town edged by PHC 4-3 and the Trojans blasted Vasco Mariners 13-1 - both teams looked flat as not even substitutions failed to turn things around.
Town replaced Paul Cann and the injured Lloyd Christopher late in the game with Perry Puckerin and Kevin Hurdle while Somerset made three changes in the space of 11 minutes in a bid to boost their punchless attack.
Lionel Furbert wasted a chance for Town after a Brendon O'Riordan pass to the far side of the box found him free on the left, but he blasted high and wide.
Then a cross into the box drew Town's keeper out of position but Dwight Basden could only lob his effort wide of an open goal in what was the miss of the second half.
