Mariners overcame an early deficit to stroll to victory in this FA Cup tie at Southampton Oval.

Joe Moniz gave Valley a surprising, third-minute lead but Mariners cancelled that at the 20-minute mark through the first of Carlos Lopes' two goals and then rarely looked troubled.

Valley were enterprising enough early on with Kevin Isaac's size up front a concern but eventually they lacked the quality that Mariners possessed and found the going tough.

Mariners thought they were on level terms after 17 minutes but Lopes had his drive deflected away off the bar by goalkeeper Bim Badomesi.

So shaky was Badomesi early on that it seemed improbable he would get out of the half without conceding at least three.

Lopes equalised from an angle on the right which the 'keeper appeared to have covered. Then Gary Adams volleyed wide and lobbed wide with the goal left vacant by an indecisive Badomesi as Mariners were having their way with Joe Cunha and Mark DeCoute in good touch.

In a rare Valley move on 51 minutes, Isaac had his header well held by Mark Paiva in the Mariners goal.

Bademosi ended the half on a positive note with a fine, tipped save from substitute Frank Massaflori's left-foot shot on the turn.

The beleaguered 'keeper was much improved in the second half, and he had to be.

He could do little about Craig Dixon's long-range effort that came off the bar and fortune further graced him when the referee disallowed what would have been Lopes' second goal in the 50th minute.

But there was no denying the go-ahead strike on the hour as Lopes waltzed through a flat-footed defence to head home Cunha's free kick from the right.

Minutes earlier, Valley nearly took the lead against the run of play but it sensationally took both uprights to keep Kevin McNeil off the scoresheet.

Mariners held court for the last half-hour as Valley wilted. Full back Harry Andrews had his second long-range shot denied by the 'keeper before Adams closed out the scoring in the 81st minute with a left-foot volley on the end of Dixon's cross.

Som. Eagles 4 Exiles 1 Commmercial League Exiles threatened an FA Cup upset with an eighth minute opener at Bernard Park.

But Somerset Eagles turned the match around with two goals in each half to advance convincingly to the second round.

Craig Tyrell broke the deadlock for Exiles, scoring from 20 yards out. That lead was shortlived, though, as Eagles came right back into it after some neat passing found A.Lambert who cooly slipped the ball across the advancing keeper.

Eagles then scored the go-ahead goal in the 27th minute off the head of Ty Smith from a corner to make it 2-1.

Smith was again on the scoresheet in the 70th minute with a firm low shot from 18 yards out which left Steve Western with no chance as he went full stretch to his right.

Eagles added a fourth in the 77th minute, this time when Eddie Callender found the net.

Exiles had their chances to add another in the 85th minute when Alan Johnson came perilously close.

Social Club 3 Fire Service 2 Another Commercial League team were eliminated at Bernard Park when Fire Service crashed to previous cup winners, Young Men's Social Club.

After some good chances by both teams in the opening minutes it was Social Club, who last won the cup in the 1960s, who scored first from the penalty spot. Kamani Fubler, after turning sharply inside the box in the 37th minute, was brought down from behind. Tokia Russell scored the resulting spot kick.

Fire Service, leaders of Commercial Group A, equalised before the half, however, through Troy Harvey.

But Harvey was sent off for picking up a second yellow card in the 55th minute for time wasting.

Social Club exposed their 10 men opponents when Dalton Bean's shot went in after a lazy attempt from Service's keeper in the 60th minute.

However, Randy Boyles was keeping Dyke Lawrence and his defence on their toes as soon as he stepped onto the field as a 52nd minute substitute. And it was the lanky striker who levelled the score in the 75th minute with a one time thunderous shot which was planted to the keeper's left from 12 yards out.

Social Club got the winner in the 82nd minute when Russell placed the ball to the right of the advancing `keeper after a breakaway.

Fubler received a red card right on the full time whistle.
