Sherlock shines on opening day of Open

Local amateur Quinton Sherlock jr starts the Bermuda Open in third place today after shooting an impressive first round one-under-par.

Sherlock jr finished on 70 yesterday, just three shots behind Canadian pro Brian McCann who leads the 67-man field after a four-under-par 67 at Port Royal Golf Course.

Former Open winner PH Horgan is in second after firing a 69 on the opening day, while last year's winner and Champions Tour player Tim Conley is in the mix after an even par 71.

Former winner and former European Tour player Kim Swan finished yesterday's round one-over-par, level with Damon Green who is the caddy of Masters winner Zach Johnson who arrives this weekend for next week's PGA Grand Slam.

Organiser Alex Madeiros said: "The first day went well and thankfully the weather cooperated. The standard of play was excellent and we're set up for an interesting few days ahead.

"Bermudian amateur Quinton Sherlock jr gave probably the performance of the day to come in third place. Brian McCann shot an impressive first round to take first spot with former Open winner PH Horgan close behind.

"Dwayne Pearman was also excellent and is in the running with an even par, while Kim Swan isn't too far behind him.

Play continues today with the final round scheduled for Sunday.
