Hood poised to clinch title
with Fire Service, Robin Hood virtually wrapped up the A Division title in the Commercial League on Saturday at White Hill Field.
Trailing 1-0 to a goal by Brian Fubler on the stroke of half-time, Hood hit back to win 4-1 with their first three goals coming between the 60th and 72nd minutes. John McCabe then finally extinguished Fire's fire with a fourth goal in the 89th minute.
Fire Service, who suffered their first defeat last weekend to North Village Rams, losing first place in the process, needed to win to keep alive their hopes of a first league title.
Fubler's goal put them on the road to victory but things turned around for them when key defender Wendell Simmons was sent off in the 55th minute after a scuffle with Scott Pomphrey.
Both players were booked, but as it was Simmons' second caution he was ejected. Pomphrey followed two minutes later for a second bookable offence as both teams were reduced to 10 men.
However, it affected Fire Service more as Simon Turner equalised on the hour and McCabe netted the first of his two goals in the 67th minute to give the unbeaten leaders the lead for the first time. Alan Mooney made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute.
The win puts Robin Hood six points clear of Fire with three matches remaining -- against the Rams, champions BAA Wanderers and Mariners.
Two wins from those three would wrap up the title for Hood. However, coach Pat Hannan isn't taking anything for granted, knowing that Rams beat Fire and Wanderers will still have pride, if nothing else, to play for.
"But at least it's in our hands now, we don't need anybody to get certain results for us,'' said Hannan.
Saturday's win leaves Hood's destiny in their own hands as they chase a first league title in four years, having finished second to Wanderers the last three years.
"It was a game of two halves, it was so windy up there,'' explained Hannan.
"Fire Service had the wind in the first half and most of the possession but they didn't really threaten too much. They missed a good chance in the second half when they hit the crossbar which would have put them up 2-0, but after that we settled down with the wind in our backs.
"It was a good game, played in really good spirits. We stuck to the task well and didn't let our heads drop.'' Rams drew 2-2 with MR Onions on Saturday with Ross Lambe scoring twice for the Rams in the first half and Mark Bridge and Eddie Geraghty replying for Onions in the second half.
Mariners edged by Prison Officers 3-2 with Gil Rodrigues, Joe Barbosa and John Frias scoring for Mariners and Craig Smith and Erskine Swan netting for Officers.
In the B Division, leaders PHC continued their winning streak, stopping Bermuda Pest Control 3-1 on goals from Vance Campbell, Miles Smith and Keith Bell while K.Francis replied for Pest Control.
Somerset Extros beat Valley 2-1 with Durite Durrant and Donnie Simmons scoring for the Extros in the first half and Roger Hall pulling one back for Valley in the first minute of the second half.
Devonshire Lions came from behind to beat Devonshire All-Stars 2-1. Jeff Richardson gave All-Stars a 20th minute lead before Gary Bascome (33) and Ernest McCallan (73) turned the match in Lions' favour.
Robin Hood and Fire Service will meet again next Monday night when they battle in the quarter-finals of the Commercial League Knockout Cup at BAA Field. The opening match at 7.00 sees BAA Wanderers taking on Exiles.
A venue is still to be confirmed for the other two matches between Lobster Pot and MR Onions and Wolves and NV Rams.
One First Division match is scheduled for tonight at Somerset where Dandy Town take on Devonshire Cougars at 8.00.
