Astwood leads team to Easter Lily win
course yesterday, celebrating her professional debut by leading Belmont to net honours in the annual 54-hole Easter Lily Pro-Am.
Astwood, long one of the Island's top amateurs, turned professional earlier this year but, like Wake Forest university graduate Kim Marshall, decided to wait until this week to play her first tournament as a pro.
And with team-mates Linda Fenton, Gilda Furbert and Lesley Watson, she set a hot pace, leading from start to finish.
Belmont completed the 54 holes on 238, a whopping 18 shots clear of second-placed Oswego Lake CC. Mid Ocean Club took third place on 260.
In the gross division, victory went to the defending champion "Bermuda Crushers'' from Chevy Chase, led by Cindy Pallitino of Denver, Colorado.
Pallatino and team-mates Joy Bonhurst, Bailey Schuerer and Pressie Hoffman carded a 282 total to beat second-placed Lobster Pot, captained by Marshall, by nine strokes. Team Storie, whose pro Gloria Ehret won Thursday's Tanqueray Ladies Day Classic, took third place on 302.
A strong wind made play difficult in yesterday's final round, although the team of "Beckster's Bombers'' from Glen Dale CC made light of the conditions with a superb net 49 to take the day's honours.
Oswego Lake had the day's low gross score of 62.
