Air arrivals drop 7 percent last week

By contrast, cruise ships arrivals are 6.8 percent up for the year with an increase of 6,919 over last year.

The week August 7 to August 13 saw a 15.2 percent increase over the corresponding year in 1994 with 1,159 more cruise ship passengers arriving in Bermuda.

Numbers were boosted by the arrival of 1,788 passengers on board the Queen Elizabeth 2 at the weekend. Regular cruise ships were packed to capacity with occupancy levels of over 100 percent on all five ships.

MAN IS ATTACKED BY MASKED GANGSTERS CRM Man is attacked by masked gangsters A Devonshire man received injuries to his face and head when four men attacked him with a baseball bat yesterday morning.

Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Wilcox said the incident was a "gang attack'' and also a "possible case of mistaken identity''.

The gang, wearing dark clothing and ski masks, attacked the Devonshire man at 1 a.m. when he was walking along Joell's Alley in Hamilton.

Sgt. Wilcox said: "Shortly afterward two members of the same gang broke into an occupied apartment on Reid Street and demanded money from the occupant.

"He replied that he had none and they left empty-handed.'' MAN MUGGED WHILE EXERCISING IN PARK CRM Man mugged while exercising in park A Pembroke man was mugged as he exercised in a Pembroke park yesterday evening.

Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Wilcox said the incident occurred in the Shaw Park area of Pembroke at 10 p.m. when the Spanish Point man was grabbed from behind by a man wielding a knife.

"The attacker demanded that the man hand over his wallet,'' said Sgt. Wilcox.

"The Spanish Point man said he was carrying no money but he did have a watch.

The assailant took it and ran off into the darkness.'' GARBAGE COLLECTION IS BACK TO NORMAL TSH Garbage collection is back to normal The Ministry of Works and Engineering yesterday resumed its normal garbage collection schedule yesterday.

Household garbage from Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday was collected.

But St. George's residents -- who normally have their garbage collected on Tuesdays -- will have to wait until Saturday.

The Ministry advised householders to place their garbage outside for collection before 7.30 a.m.

The Tynes Bay drop-off facility is also open from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily.

NEW STUDENT ON TOUR AT STONINGTON EDC New students on tour at Stonington New students touring Bermuda College are asked to gather in the lecture theatre of the college's New Hall building today.

More than 300 students were expected to tour the Stonington campus in Paget between yesterday and today.

The freshmen will sit in on orientation sessions with their parents who will later tour the college and meet deans of various faculties, college spokeswoman Mrs. Jan Doidge said.
