Hill leads Bay onslaught with whirlwind century
Nationals 208-5 Nationals paid the price for turning up at Sea Breeze Oval with just eight men as Bailey's Bay blasted their six bowlers for 387 in 50 overs, including 101 in the final five overs.
Corey Hill led the late onslaught with 111 not out as he smashed 11 fours and seven sixes while Anthony Braithwaite, with whom he shared in an unbroken stand of 176 for the eighth wicket, added 66 including three fours and three sixes.
Going into the last five overs of their innings Bay were 286-7. The next 50 came up in 12 minutes as Hill and Braithwaite threw caution to the wind, while the last 50 came in 14 minutes. The 176 between the pair was posted in just 48 minutes.
With so many gaps in the field, Bay cruised to 83 in 19 overs for the first wicket on a good batting strip as captain Ricky Hill stroked seven fours and two sixes in his 52 and vice captain Roger Trott helped himself to 43.
Devrae Hollis, batting at number four, scored 31 and Cal (Patches) Dill (39) continued to pile on the runs. With 20 overs remaining they had 151 on the board but Corey Hill's first century of the season enabled them to get close to the 400 mark.
Alan Corcoran was the pick of the Nationals bowlers with four for 64 from nine overs while Hoyt Zuill claimed two for 64 off 10. Graham Strange, leading the team in the absence of Bruce Perinchief, was the most expensive of their bowlers, giving up 80 runs in his 10 overs.
A combination of overconfidence on the part of Bay and determination by Nationals meant that Bay struggled to get the seven wickets needed for victory, despite taking the first (Quinn Outerbridge) in just the second over.
A stand of 60 for the second wicket between former Bay pair Dennis Trott and Rodney Masters in 15 overs served to frustrate Bay's bowlers and the lead was followed by the rest of the Nationals batsmen who gained a moral victory by lasting the whole 50 overs.
Trott was their high man with 68, hitting nine fours and three sixes, while Corcoran scored 39 not out from seven fours and a six and Strange 34 with seven fours.
Alleyne Francis scored 25 after adding 64 with Corcoran for the fifth wicket.
Francis was smartly run out by youth player Steven Outerbridge whose direct throw from mid-off beat him back to the batman's end.
Outerbridge also had a good spell of off-spin, taking one for 23 from 10 overs, while Dennis Pilgrim claimed two for 40.
Cleveland 181 St. George's 182-3 Dexter and Wendell Smith blasted 81 for the first wicket in just 10 overs as Cleveland's total of 181 was reached for just the loss of three wickets at Wellington Oval yesterday.
Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Cleveland suffered two early setbacks when they lost opener Courtney Trott in the fourth over and Wayne Smith in the fifth -- with just 17 on the board.
However, in the next 21 overs Carlton Smith and Jason Simons got things back on track as they shared in a stand of 71 before Simons departed for 31. In the same over Jermaine Postlethwaite became the third batsman to fail to score as St. George's struck another blow.
Stubborn Smith shared in another promising partnership, this time for the fifth wicket, when he and Allan Douglas added 33. Smith was eventually sixth out when the score was 132, hitting 59 including eight fours while Curtis Jackson, batting at number seven, scored 29 before being run out. Gregg Foggo and Herbie Bascome both took two wickets, Foggo giving up 14 in four overs and Bascome 27 in 10.
With their bats hitting anything loose, Dexter and Wendell Smith put on the first 50 of their partnership in 30 minutes by the sixth over. The stand eventually produced 81 before Dexter was trapped lbw by Johnny Richardson for 35 which came from five fours and two sixes.
Wendell stayed at the crease long enough to reach his 50, finishing with 65 before he was lbw to spinner Gregory Talbot. Smith hit eight fours and a six and after he departed on 138, captain Clay Smith and Clevie Wade carried the team to victory with a stand of 42. Clay scored 37 and Wade 16.
Richardson was the best Cleveland bowler with two for 37 from 10 overs while Talbot got the other wicket, giving up 26 in his 10 overs.
COREY HILL -- blasted a century in 56 minutes from 40 balls as Bailey's Bay scored a whopping 387 against eight-man Nationals.
