Lomas back for recital
accepted as a student at the famed Juilliard School of Music in New York, has now been selected to play first clarinet in the Juilliard Symphony.
He competed against third year students for inclusion in the Symphony, one of two orchestras at the School. The senior Student Symphony Orchestra, which participated in last year's Bermuda Festival, is open only to third year students and above.
One of Bermuda's most gifted young musicians, Mark Lomas will be returning home next week to take part in a special concert at Christ Church, Devonshire.
He and guest artist, organist Theodore Thomas, Jr. will join together `In Duo Recital' for a programme of music that includes Bach, Poulenc, Vaughan-Williams and Alec Templeton.
Mr. Lomas will be playing the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Francois Poulenc, as well as contemporary composer Alan Templeton's popular `Pocket-Size' Sonata No. 2.
Mr. Lomas, an ex-student of Saltus Grammar School and the Purcell School of Music in London, began playing the clarinet since the age of nine, beginning his career at a very early age when he played the recorder under the tuition of Douglas Frith.
When he was accepted at Juilliard, he discovered that at 16, he was one of the very youngest students to enter its hallowed doors, and the youngest undergraduate of his year. At the time, he commented that the audition, where his set piece was the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, was "daunting''.
Mr. Theodore Thomas, currently the organist and director of the Inspirational Choir of Salem Baptist Church in Pennsylvania, is a graduate of Lincoln University and obtained his Masters, majoring in Organ Performance, from West Chester University. Recently, he was chosen as the featured artist at the dedication recital for the new Moller pipe organ at the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
Karol Sue Reddington, Director of the Dunbarton School of Music, will be the accompanist for the concert. An accomplished artist in her own right who has performed around the world, Ms Reddington has performed frequently in Bermuda since her arrival here last year.
The In Duo Recital, organised by the Organ Fund Committee, takes place at Christ Church, Devonshire, on Sunday, October 29 at 8 p.m. Admission ($15) is by programme, obtainable at the door, or by telephoning 292-7800.
