Trott and Hoey triumph in 5 Flat Miles race
Sean Trott and Rose-Anna Hoey powered their way to impressive victories in the Swan's Running Club 5 Flat Miles road race yesterday. And for both runners the race formed only part of their extended Sunday morning training runs.Trott followed up his Ed Sherlock Five Mile Road Race win from two weeks ago with another sub-28 minutes performance. And he did it with some style, having already run six miles before the race even started. The point-to-point course from West Pembroke Primary School to Shelly Bay parking lot gave many of the competitors the opportunity of doing the race and then running back to the start line to collect their belongings, adding a few extra miles their training.Trott rode his bike to the finish in the morning, then ran the course in reverse to reach the start line. The extended warm-up seemed to serve him well as he led the race field from start to finish, stopping the clock at 27 minutes 57 seconds."I ran six miles before the start and then went out as hard as I could in the race. I got under 28 minutes again, having done more miles beforehand," he said afterwards."The conditions were good. I'm getting my fitness back. I'll be doing the Lindo's to Lindo's 10K next weekend."Second runner home was Ryan Wilcox in 29.15. Wilson, who was third in the Front Street Mile local adults' race in January, used the race as a fast tempo workout. He was closely followed across the line by Hoey, winner of the women's race and third overall. Hoey is training for the Boston Marathon and, like men's winner Trott, had already done five miles of running before the race started. She added more training miles afterwards. In the race, Hoey played ‘cat and mouse’ with 16-year-old Nate Hartwig as they jockeyed for the third-place slot. The friendly competition served them both well as they easily beat the 30-minute barrier. Hoey claimed a lifetime best of 29.27."It was a lovely course and I really want to thank Swan's Running Club for putting on this race," she said.Second in the women's race was Victoria Fiddick, who was pleased to go under 33 minutes, stopping the clock at 32.54.First walker to finish was Gilda Cann in 63.49.Entries for Sunday's Lindo's to Lindo's 10K road race and four-mile walk close at 5pm on Wednesday.
