Hedges in touch with the pros
Grand Prix this morning after yesterday's Time Trial at Clearwater Beach.
Hedges, riding in the Pro Men category for the Richard Sachs team, finished the six miles around the former military base in a time of 13:23.99 -- good enough for 12th place on the leaderboard.
He was by far the highest placed of the Island riders, with Geri Mewett, of DeFeet Winners Edge and 17-year-old Tyler Butterfield of Richard Sachs -- using the event to train for the forthcoming World Junior Championships -- 38th and 45th in the same category respectively.
Hedges finished ahead of many crack US riders and his performance comes on the back of a good showing in Thursday night's Classic Criterium around the streets of Hamilton.
Leading the field after yesterday's event was Team Shaklee rider, Colby Pearce.
The American posted a time of 12:48.03 to head the race by 3.59 seconds from second placed Matt DeCanio of the 7UP squad.
Colby's position should come as no surprise as he is a time-trial specialist.
A rider who found his form on the banked track, he set four national records in the race against the clock.
He has twice been a bronze medalist at the National Time Trial Championships and is a former National Collegiate Champion.
Saturn rider, Chris Wherry, who took the Classic title in tremendous style was way down the field -- finishing 54th of the 58 Pro Men riders to complete the course.
Anne Samplonius, part of the Saturn team which claimed a 1-2-3 in the women's Classic, finished the Time Trial 4.44 seconds ahead of Melanie McQuaid of the Proctor and Gamble team.
Samplonius recorded a time of 14:24.27, just over 31 seconds ahead of Bermuda's highest placed female, Melanie Claude, of ECSM, who came in eighth.
Team-mate Julia Hawley finished in 11th in a time of 15:13.98.
In the Intermediate Men category Steve Millington, of DeFeet Winners Edge, finished in a time of 14:02.99 with Jonathan Herring, of Bermuda, just under five seconds behind.
In the Masters category, Steve Lehman, of Tri State Velo, came home first in a time of 14:21. David Freytes was second in 15:30.
Today sees the Road Race begin in Southside Road, St David's -- with the men completing 15 laps or approximately 75 miles and the women 12 laps or 60 miles.
Tomorrow is the Criterium around the streets of Hamilton.
