Hatherley wins sprint finish
Mark Hatherley remained on course to win his maiden Butterfield Bermuda Grand Prix after claiming victory in a sprint finish in today’s stage two road race in St David’s, with fractions of a second required to separate three riders.
Hatherley, who won the time-trial in St George’s last night, finished the 64-kilometre course around Southside in a time 1hr 44min 6.2sec, with Shannon Lawrence, of Tokio, second in 1:44:06.4 and Matthew Claridge, Fast Forward Bicycle Works, third in 1:44:06.8.
The 38-year-old praised his Winners Edge team-mates for the key roles they played in his road race victory.
“It was hard, it was windy and I have to praise my team-mates today,” Hatherley said. “They were excellent and all I had to do was the minimal.
“Thankfully I was able to save enough energy for the sprint. I knew Lawrence was coming on fast so I knew I had to go.
“I led from yesterday’s event and I just wanted to carry it over and keep the momentum going.
“I’ve finished second before but I’ve never actually won the [Butterfield Bermuda Grand Prix]. I just have to try and stay out of trouble in the [criterium] and hopefully have some luck.”
Nicole Mitchell, of Winners Edge, was victorious in the women’s race having also won her category in the time-trial. She finished the women’s 51.2km course in 1:02:55. April Galda Joyce, of Madison-Digicel, came second in 1:03:12 and Gabriella Arnold, of Winners Edge, finished third in 1:05:01.
Mitchell usually competes in the Male A category for a greater test but said she felt it was important to showcase her ability in the Women’s A category as she builds towards the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“I put in a few attacks early on and tried to split up the field,” said Mitchell, who returned to the Island last week after competing in Arizona and Nevada. “April [Galda Joyce] and I were working really well together until the last lap when I soloed to the finish.
“I’ve raced in the Male A category for the last few years to help me prepare the best I can for overseas representation.But with the Commonwealth Games coming up, I felt it was important to showcase my strengths to the selection committee. I would have liked the race to have been a little longer but it was a good time.”
The Grand Prix concludes tomorrow with a criterium in Hamilton beginning at 9am with the junior races, 9.25 for the 13-16 juniors and female races, and 10.05 and 10.55 for the Male B and Male A races.
