Mulderig launches Bermuda cookbook for children

Betsy Mulderig's new book "Toppy Tours the Dinosaurs"

There's an old saying, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. It's probably why Tiny the Tree Frog always adds a tablespoon of honey when he makes grog. Frogs love flies.Frog grog is just one of the special recipes in a new cookbook, ‘Tiny the Tree Frog's Bermuda Cookbook for Kids', written by Elizabeth Mulderig.“I thought it would be a fun idea to get parents and kids involved together in the kitchen since the very premise behind cooking is to nurture,” she said.Ironically, she is not known for her prowess in the kitchen. In fact her husband, Hugh Watlington, has referred to her cooking ability as “dangerous”. This meant that Tiny had to look to family and friends for the recipes. International Imports even loaned a few pots and pans for Tiny's culinary experiments as they will be carrying the book.“Tiny has a whole lot of thanking to do concerning this book,” said Ms Mulderig.“Elaine Murray from The Irish Linen Shop is on that list as it was her elegant idea to first produce a limited edition of 30 books exclusively sold in her store. Not to worry, however, the rest of the books will be available after the holiday season.”The hand-coloured limited editions will be available at a book signing in The Irish Linen Shop on December 3 from 3pm to 4.30pm.The recipes such as Bermudiana Bananarama Bread, Sunny Honey Island Tea and Kooky Kite Day Cookies, are simple and fun for children to make. The cookies are in honour of Good Friday and there are two other recipes honouring Boxing Day and Cup Match.“The layout is very clear and simple as well,” said Ms Mulderig.“The ingredients are on one page and directions on the other. Perhaps if I had enjoyed a cookbook like Tiny's as a child I would not be relegated to cleaning detail in the kitchen, but cooking as well. Sadly, my mother is a gourmet cook but the gene was not passed down to me.”The cookbook is not the only project that Ms Mulderig has on the burner. She will be releasing a CD of her previous book ‘Tiny the Tree Frog Tours Bermuda' this Christmas. She has also just delivered a new “baby”, in the form of a dinosaur character called ‘Toppy'. Little Toppy stars in his first book, ‘Toppy Tours the Dinosaurs', about touring the portrait gallery of his ancestors in the Dinosaur Museum in Lyme Regis, Dorset, Devon. The area is twinned with St George's here in Bermuda. The book has been selling in England for the past few months. In fact, Daunt's bookstore in London has placed four of the books in their windows.“We are incredibly thrilled with Daunt's response to the Toppy book,” said Ms Mulderig. “Especially since it is one of London's most important bookstores and has just purchased Waterstone's bookstore chain in England.”She hoped that since Bermuda embraced her touring tree frog with such alacrity, the Island might also welcome Toppy.Ms Mulderig's three new products are available at Bermuda Book Store Ltd, Brown and Co Ltd, AS Coopers & Sons Ltd's Children's Store, The Irish Linen Shop, and the Craft Market in Dockyard. For more information visit www.betsybermuda.com or visit Ms Mulderig on Facebook.
