Half-a-million dollars donation to new hospital

The fundraising drive for Bermuda's new hospital got off to a flying start with a $539,000 donation on behalf of the late Alfred Barber.

Mr. Barber was an avid supporter of Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) and made many contributions to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where a wing has already been named in his honour.

He is said to have had a vision that included first-class healthcare for everyone on the Island.

The cash was handed to Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust (BHCT) from Mr. Barber's estate in recognition of his nephew Walter Barber.

BHB chairman Herman Tucker said: "On behalf of Bermuda Hospitals Board, I would like to thank the late Alfred David Barber for making this generous donation to our new hospital. His foresight will help to make health care enhancements in Bermuda a reality.

"Mr. Barber's past charitable contributions have for many years made a difference in the life of our community. Today's gift will create a legacy that ensures the best healthcare will be available in Bermuda for generations to come."

BHCT chairman Philip Butterfield said: "I am pleased and grateful to accept this gift on behalf of Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust. This gift will be held in good faith by the Trust — as will all forthcoming donations to the hospitals — until needed by BHB to make our new hospital a reality."

BHCT, a registered charity, is responsible for holding in trust all monies donated on behalf of the hospitals and for advising and fundraising for BHB as well as managing the distribution of donations.
