Belco waves goodbye to bad oil

The Esso tanker Osco Stripe arrived at the Ferry Reach Esso pier on Friday to discharge a new load of oil. When she completed delivery, the 528-foot vessel re-loaded the last of the bad oil delivered in March.

At the time, Belco said a chemical reaction had caused asphalt molecules to form in the oil.

Bermuda's container ships were also busy as import orders rose to meet tourism industry needs.

The Somers Isles arrived on Sunday from Florida with 90 containers. Meyer Agencies said six refrigerator containers were among the cargo along with seven boats, a Mitsubishi truck and four garbage trucks.

The Bermuda Islander was in port on Monday with 52 dry containers, seven refrigerator containers and three boats.

When Bermuda Islander left on Tuesday she carried construction equipment from the US Naval Air Station.

Container Ship Management reported the Oleander in Hamilton on Sunday with 146 dry containers and a season-high 37 refrigerator containers.

Break bulk aboard Oleander included a van, two cars and one 40-foot platform.

Harnett & Richardson was today expecting the Japanese car ship Victory Ace for delivery of 11 cars and 72 cases of spare parts.

On the cruise ship scene, the Island this week hosts more than 5,000 visitors.

Meyer Agencies said the Regent Sun departs today after a 24-hour visit. She arrived with 850 passengers from New York and is headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Chandris' Meridian berthed at Dockyard on Tuesday with 853 passengers out of Philadelphia. She sailed today for New York.

Chandris' Horizon carried 1,326 passengers when she steamed into port on Monday.

Meyer also reported Royal Caribbean Cruise's Dreamward in port on Monday with 1,289 passengers.

The Crystal Harmony is due in Dockyard today and Friday with 960 passengers, John S. Darrell said.
