Minister Dr. Ewart Brown has revealed.

He said although private dealerships and Belco were moving to electric cars it was too early for Government to commit.

He said: "The electric car initiative is still alive in the ministry but it is not on the front burner. The reason is that the technology is so fast evolving that we didn't want to commit to one form of technology and six months later find out something else.

"We are waiting until the technology will allow cars to be charged maybe once a week.

"The average now is once every 30 or so miles. So we didn't want to introduce it and have it fail because it is premature.

"My understanding is that there is a model now available which will allow double that mileage before recharging batteries.

"But again less than a year ago it was less than 30, now it is double that.

The technology is moving along. Electric cars are allowed on the Island. We were just looking for something we can recommend to the island.'' He said the latest large scale use of electric vehicles was the Sydney Olympics.

He said: "I am waiting to hear now about performance.

"We were looking for a position so we could say this company has produced a car which could very well replace a number of cars in Bermuda. But it's not there.''
