School plans to expand

With the addition of the International Baccalaureate programme, Somersfield Academy is planning to add a new two-storey building on the existing grounds.

The school on Middle Road in Devonshire submitted a planning application to the Development Applications Board to add the new building, covered terrace and entryway to accommodate for students taking the International Baccalaureate certificate.

"We're connecting two buildings that are already in existence," said Andy Burnett-Herkes, the director of development at Somersfield.

"Basically we have three sides to our quadrangle so we're adding the fourth," he added.

The building will be called the International Baccalaureate Centre (IBC) and will house several classrooms specific for the students who will be taking the two-year course.

A library, science room and art room will also be part of the new building.

"We're trying to consolidate students of that age into one building."

Once planning is approved the contractors hope to begin as soon as school is let out for the summer, Mr. Burnett-Herkes said.

"Initially, we'd like to have it for a summer start and have it ready for the children by September."
