Trojans up against the odds
coach Andrew Bascome will tonight attempt to revitalise his squad for the challenge against North Village in their Friendship Trophy match at John's Field.
The contest has been rescheduled after it was recently washed out.
Bascome will be up against it as he tries to revive a team that is coming off two huge losses -- the most recent a 4-1 defeat at home to Vasco.
The coach was hoping that a good result from that clash would have given the team some momentum to lift them out of their recent slump. But it was not to be and tonight they will likely find a Village team, confident after a 2-1 league victory at Southampton Rangers, almost as formidable.
Bascome asked his team to "dig deep'' against Vasco, but their response was luke warm and it remains to be seen how motivated they will be tonight.
One thing Bascome won't have to worry about is the speed of Village forward Kevin Jennings and full back Arthur Simons who were sent off the bench during the clash against Southampton by referee Stuart Crockwell.
But with veteran Elliott Jennings and Jemeiko Jennings playing well up front and Neil Robinson constantly improving in midfield after returning to the team from Boulevard this season, Village still have the depth to cause concern to any defence.
Bermuda's national youth squad face a tough outing in Trinidad this evening when they take on the host nation in the first of three Youth World Cup qualifying matches.
The Under-17 team defeated St. Vincent 2-0 on aggregate in their last two-leg qualifying match, but both of those games were played in Bermuda, and now the youngsters, accompanied by national coaching director Clyde Best, will need to be at their best to get past the Trinidadians.
On Friday, Bermuda meet Netherland Antilles in the second qualifying match in Trinidad and then take on Barbados in the final game on Sunday.
Should Bermuda advance from this qualifying stage they would then head to El Salvador to meet the host country, Mexico and Canada in another series to decide who represents the CONCACAF region at the World Cup finals.
Best has already said he believes the youth squad have "a good chance'' of becoming the first Bermuda national team ever to reach the finals of a World Cup at any level.
