A ten-point plan for turning Bermuda around
Happy Guy Fawkes Day, people! So we have a new leader! Well done to Premier Cox. Your mommy and daddy are proud of you and smiling! I have to admit she was the obvious choice. The Deputy Premier was a surprise to some but I knew that he had tremendous support from within the party faithful. But where do we go from here? More on this after the top 20.
Up to #1 is Ride by Ciara featuring Ludacris. At #2 is I Like It by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull. Tumbling to #3 is Dynamite by Taio Cruz.
Improving to #4, it's Hello, Good Morning by Diddy. Up to #5 is Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, a former essential new track and another rising hit. Improving to #6 is Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars.
And now, my current favourite. Up to #7 is DJ Got Us Falling In Love by Usher featuring Pitbull. This is a cool, pleasant, bouncy, singalong track that simply works anywhere. I still see people in their cars singing it with their kids. That is so cool. Check out Usher's CD; its hot and has several other hot tracks. This is a nice gift for a dude to get for his girl; or for a girl to get for her dude; for no reason, just because.
Up to #8 is Deuces, by Chris Brown featuring Tyga and Kevin McCall. Falling to #9 it's I Love The Way You Lie by Eminem featuring Rihanna.
Improving to #10 is Only Girl In The World by Rihanna. There's even a dance mix to boot; which bangs. Down to #11 is Rockstar 10, another hit by Rihanna Tumbling to #12 is California Gurls by Katy Perry, featuring Snoop Dogg. Up to #13 is Just A Dream by Nelly. Falling to #14 is Find Your Love by Drake, one of the most popular artists these days.
Jumping to #15 is Bottoms Up by Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj.
Up to #16 is To Paris with Love by the irrepressible Donna Summer, last week's essential new hit. Up to #17 is Can't Be Friends by Trey Songz, a former essential new track. Improving to #18 is Holding You Down by Jazmine Sullivan.
New at #19 is this week's essential new track. Dirty Picture by Taio Cruz featuring Ke$ha. This chick really is a piece of work; but Taio is smart to team up with her; because her controversial style generates PR. And in this business; he or she who gets the most PR is King! The reason we have a picture of Ke$ha is because her single We R Who We R is in at #20. I did say that she was a piece of work. A lovely piece of work; but a piece of work nonetheless.
Now back to this week's word – the way Forward for Bermuda. Last week I submitted a list of ten items as issues that require urgent attention and action. The way Premier Cox has structured her Ministries, it is clear that she "gets it".
The new team/Cabinet definitely has its work cut out for it; having to instill some confidence in the public; many of whom lost faith in the Government, meaning all of us, including civil servants. Hopefully we can all work together to rebuild the trust and confidence of the public in Government officials.
The easiest way to do that is to:
1. Reduce Government spending.
2. Reduce our national debt.
3. Increase visitor arrivals and develop business for Bermuda.
4. Sort out education – I pray that Dame Jennifer can do this. When she does, she will be the saviour of our Public Education System. She has a good man in Permanent Secretary Warren Jones to help her. I have to believe that they can do it and I encourage all to support them so that it happens. Our kids need this to work.
5. Reduce crime, the drug industry and anti-social behaviour.
6. Be a more open, accountable and fiscally responsible Government.
7. Succeed at workforce development.
8. Improve service delivery across Government.
9. Turn us back to God and away from sin.
10. Build stronger families and communities and let's get past the racial divide that only seeks to destroy us rather than bind us together in God's love.
I submit that the new Premier has demonstrated a clear understanding of what Bermuda needs now and I must credit her for the sensible, logical and decisive manner in which she has adjusted the Ministerial portfolios. It is clear that she has given this much thought and been thinking about this for quite some time. This is a good quality. I really like the concept of Tourism and Business Development. It sends the message that we must develop business for Bermuda.
I submit again, as I did last week, that if her new Cabinet can address these ten issues, they will go down in history as the most effective Cabinet we've ever had. I pray that they do. Peace be with us all ... DJLT.
