Two-goal Jennings too hot for Fire Service
Two-goal hero Keith Jennings was too hot to handle yesterday for Fire Service.
Roared on by the home fans, the 17-year-old St. David's striker came out of the blocks smoking.
And his 70th minute piece of soccer wizardry will have burned itself into the memory cells of most spectators at St. David's.
The youngster created a buzz as he went on a darting run from the left corner flag towards Fire Service's goalmouth, leaving defenders in his wake.
He then fired the ball low and to the left of Fire Service's goalkeeper Scott Quinn.
Jennings went on to help himself to another goal in the 86th minute, although this one owed more to an embarrassing goalkeeping blunder.
Quinn completely miscued a goal-kick, sending the ball straight at St. David's strike force. It was left to Jennings and Kanhai Fray to decide who would complete the formality of a goal. In the event, it was Jennings who grabbed the glory. And few would have argued with that.
Jennings' strikes followed a superb 59th minute opening goal by St. David's substitute Otis Minors.
Minors latched on to a long through ball from the left by midfielder Patrick White.
He controlled the ball and then rifled it into the top of the net from about 12 yards.
For Fire Service, it was a day when they rued failing to cash in on a promising first half. They managed to hold their own, until St. David's turned on the heat in the second half.
Park United 0, Social Club 4 There was no question Second Division Social Club deserved to win this cup tie at Wellington Oval -- but the size of victory doesn't reflect how much they dominated the match.
Two goals in each half sealed the win but inbetween there were a host of missed chances by Social Club who dominated from start to finish.
They took half an hour to break the deadlock with captain Shawn Laws supporting a move down the right which resulted in a misdirected cross from Goodwin Spence finding the far top corner after 'keeper Mark Viera had been caught off his line.
Eight minutes later Social Club added a second when a pass to Troy Saunders by defender Andre Woods saw the winger get the ball under control and neatly place it into the far corner.
Viera blocked a scorcher from Dean Young in the 44th minute that would have made it 3-0.
In the second half the missed chances continued as a number of good crosses from Webster Mills Jr. were wasted. Viera was replaced in goal by defender Anthony Francis who succeeded in keeping a clean sheet until late in the match when Social Club struck twice in the final 11 minutes.
Rembert Hill came on to replace Young in the 70th minute and the big striker closed out the scoring with goals in the 79th and 89th minutes.
