The football season may not be over just yet, with news that another Special Congress Meeting is scheduled for Monday night, called by Mark Wade, the president of the Bermuda Football Association.

On Monday, BFA affiliates voted by an 11-10 margin with one abstention to end the season, which has not seen any action since December 5 when the Covid pandemic forced the Government to shut down all sport.

However, both David Burt, the Premier, and Ernest Peets, the sports minister, urged the clubs to reconsider the decision. It is understood some of the 11 clubs that voted to stop football were concerned that it was not financially feasible to host games that had few or no spectators and subsequently few people at the club bars.

Monday’s Zoom meeting will start at 6pm. On the agenda will be practice/friendly match regulations as well as the request from Burt and Peets to reconsider the decision to end the season.

“I am very disappointed for those young people who have been training, undergoing the necessary testing and anyone involved in preparing for the restart of the season. However, the Government respects the decision of our local football clubs and we will not question it,” Burt said in his Covid-19 address on Tuesday evening.

“The permission to resume football has been given by the Government, and if there is an opportunity for the clubs to reconsider, then I hope they will do so — so that our young people can return to what they love, competitive sport.”

Competitive sport was in Stage 3 of the Return to Play guidance issued by the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, although an increase in Covid-19 cases can delay the process.

Last Saturday, during an under-11 friendly match between Devonshire Colts and Southampton Rangers, some boys were in contact with someone who had tested positive for Covid 19.

Just two days ago, there was another surge in cases with 18 people testing positive.

The decision was also made at Monday night’s Congress meeting to allow the results of the two completed competitions to stand. Southampton Rangers won the Charity Cup with a 4-0 win over North Village in September while Devonshire Cougars beat Dandy Town 2-1 in the Dudley Eve Trophy final on November 11.
