Belco ready for big move
generators is slated to begin tonight. Whilst the task is a heavy one, it is also delicate.
Engineers for the Bermuda Electric Light Company and the city of Hamilton will carefully try to avoid underground piping and cabling systems and have mapped out a very precise route for the massive equipment.
Secretary of the Corporation of Hamilton, Roger Sherratt, noted that absolutely no vehicles should be parked on along the route after 7 p.m.
The specially outfitted trailer will travel at two miles an hour, making the journey from the docks on Front Street to Belco's plant on Cemetery Road in about three hours.
The route will be Front Street onto Queen Street, left on Church Street West, Par-la-Ville Road North, Woodlands Road and Cemetery Road. The roads are to be clear of all vehicles on both sides but once the vehicle has passed an area, that area will be re-opened.
The Birdcage will not have to be moved to accommodate the trailer.
Corporation of Hamilton Secretary, Roger Sherratt last night sought to warn those planning to go to the movies at the Little Theatre, to park in the City Hall car park.
Meanwhile Belco spokeswoman, Robin McPhee noted that a number of trips of smaller equipment were made on Saturday and Sunday with two flatbed trucks from Bermuda Forwarders.
"So far everything has gone smoothly.'' she said.
