The 12-inch-thick, 85-foot-long wall is expected to be finished a little later in the year after it is tested by an expert from the Royal Engineers.

Lt. Col. Kevin Ryan said: "The old range had reached a point where it did not meet all the safety standards which are now necessary in British Army ranges.

"The new range has been designed by the Royal Engineers technical advisory section in Warminster. The Regiment has improved it even more by strengthening it because of the risk of hurricanes. It has been approved by the Royal Engineers.'' Builders Global Construction are working on a catch structure overhead which will stop bullets ricocheting dangerously into the air. Instead they will become embedded in soft wood.

Lt. Col. Ryan said: "It is a 25-metre range capable of taking eight people at a time.

"We are still using the 100-metre range at Warwick Long Bay and we are hoping to change that into a 200-metre range.'' He said that the new range should be "substantially completed'' by the middle of September but will need to be certified by the Royal Engineers before it can be fired on.
