Girls handle Panama easily but boys go down to Guatemala
Bermuda's team had mixed fortunes on Tuesday at the North/Central America and Caribbean Pre-Qualifying tournament for the World Juniors Championships in Trinidad.
The Island's boys went down 3-0 to Guatemala at the Earl Taylor Courts.
Bermuda's Evan Hughes was easily outclassed by Javier Castillo of Guatemala in the first match going down 6-0, 6-0 while in the second match Chris Rego started off as he did the first day jumping ahead 4-2 and looked like the first set was his in just a matter of time.
Bermuda coach Jerome Bradshaw said: "Chris dropped his serve at his point but broke back immediately and began to serve at 5-3 for the set. He promptly had three set points but failed to capitalise. Although he continued to have exciting exchanges with Josue Galindo – the number one Guatemalan – he could not seem to put it away.
"Galindo continued to pound his favourite inside-out forehand forcing Chris in a defensive mode."
This unnerved the Bermuda number one as he started to push the majority of his strokes instead of hitting with authority as he did in the earlier games. His opponent took the first set 7-5 leaving Rego to ponder what could have been.
The second set started with Chris jumping ahead again 2-0. Things were looking promising but then Galindo broke back to get on serve and never looked back taking the match 7-5, 6-3.
"The doubles match was no contest as the Guatemalan pair of Javier Castillo and Jose Ponsa disposed of Bermuda's Adam Turner and Evan Hughes 6-0, 6-2."
Bermuda's boys now have a record of one win and one loss in their group and are not likely to finish in the winners' bracket.
Guatemala will take on Barbados who were beaten earlier this week by Bermuda while yesterday Bermuda's boys had a rest day.
But Bermuda's girls led by Tyler Smith had an easy day on Tuesday disposing of the Panamanian team 3-1.
Eva Frazonni defeated Daniela Diez 6-1, 6-0 while Smith outclassed Maria Peralta 6-0, 6-1 and then Smith and Clemintine Keyes crushed Daniela Diez and Maria Peralta 6-0, 6-0.
