In Group II, Val Protheroe pulled off a number of deceptive lobs to send Carol Ferris scuttling off in the wrong direction in a 9-6, 9-6, 2-9, 9-6 battle.

Murray Brewer, Colin Alexander and Jan Brewer dispatched their opponents 3-0 in the men's group B to advance to the second round. Norman Furtado, however, had to draw his energy from an excited crowd to overcome Dick Meredith in a close 1-9, 9-7, 9-7, 9-5 encounter.

In Group C, Barry Hanson, in training for the men's veterans Northern team championships next month, came close to victory against Adam Hawley. However, Hawley's fine touch game won through in the end with a final score of 9-5, 1-9, 9-6, 3-9, 9-7.
