Coach Steede finding the runs

Nyon Steede emerged from the shadow of elder brother Albert when he blasted a maiden ton against Western Stars on Sunday and led his Warwick team-mates by example to a memorable win at St. John?s Field.

The 36-year-old Government human resources manager is a new addition at Warwick after giving Police many years service in the past.

And while Steede appears to have settled in nicely at his new surroundings, coaching on an interim basis, he admitted, was one of the furthest things he had in mind when he first showed up at Cobb?s Hill for pre-season training.

?I didn?t go to Warwick to coach. . . . but I decided to take over the position until they can find a full-time coach,? he said. ?I just came over to play but because I did assist a bit at Police I?ve taken on the responsibility and it seems to be paying off.?

Steede hammered eight fours and seven sixes during a delightfully entertaining 133-ball knock that laid the foundation for Warwick?s shock win over Stars.

Warwick?s head coach Allan Douglas recently informed club officials he can longer commit himself fully to the position he has held for the past several seasons due to increased work commitments at his full-time job at Riddell?s Bay Golf Club.

?I just need more time to commit myself to my new position (superintendent) at Riddell?s Bay. . . this is priority,? said Douglas, one of the finest wicketkeepers Bermuda has ever produced.

?It?s just too difficult to make the time and commitment they (Warwick) deserve . . . I just can?t give it to them and it is really unfair.

?I informed them I will help out where I can . . . but my first priority is at Riddell?s Bay.?

Meanwhile, Steede believes trying to lead by example is having a positive impact on his personal game.

?I am out there telling the players what to do, how things should be done and trying to keep the intensity high. And so I have to now walk the walk and go out there on game day and practice what I am trying to preach to them. And I think this has helped to take my game to another level because the youngsters are looking up to me.?

Warwick?s team is presently comprised of some of the most promising cricketers on the Island, complemented by the experience of senior team members Daniel Morgan, Quinton Burch and Steede.

And while the interim coach takes pride from his own batting performance on Sunday, he said Warwick?s win owed much to an increased emphasis in training on fielding drills.

?Fielding has always been one of my strongest areas,? Steede added. ?And I can now see some of the benefits showing up in the game as far as their fielding is concerned.?

Stars? opener Gershon Gibbons received a first-hand taste of Warwick?s aggression in the field on Sunday when he was run out by a Lamar Caines direct throw at the stumps.

?They are a lot more aware in the field and accurate in their throwing,? Steede noted. ?And I attribute Sunday?s win to the fielding drills we have been working on over the past few weeks.?

However, when asked would he like to assume head coaching duties at Warwick on a full-time basis, Steede emphatically replied ?no?.

?Not at this particular time because it?s difficult with my work commitments,? he explained. ?That?s why I have just taken over the coaching role on an interim basis.?
