Customs officers enjoy challenges
include responsibility for the collection of all Government revenues due on goods imported into Bermuda; the prevention of the illegal importation of restricted or prohibited goods, which includes drugs; and certain functions connected with agriculture, fisheries, immigration, health and the environment.
OCCUPATION: Trainee Customs Officer EDUCATION: Applicants must have successfully passed the Bermuda Secondary School Certificate (BSSC) with passes in Traditional Mathematics and English or equivalent qualifications, or have relevant Customs experience.
TRAINING: Trainees will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of the Customs Service over a two-year probationary period. On successfully passing a mandatory proficiency examination at the end of the probationary period, trainees will advance to the substantive rank of Customs Officer.
PERSONAL: Successful candidates must be prepared to work any part of the 24 hour period; sometimes beyond normal working hours, anywhere on the Island and should have their own telephone and transportation.
Applicants must be able to deal courteously and efficiently with the general public and have the ability to make sound judgmental decisions while working under pressure.
EARNINGS - The current salary scale of the Trainee Customs Officer is PS 16-18, $35,747 - $38,367. For Customs Officers, it is PS 18-20, $38,367 - $41,300 per annum.
