Grandmother says shooting victim was lucky not to suffer worse injuries

Shooting victim Shakeda Davis was lucky she was sitting when she was hit by bullets fired from a passing motorcycle. So believes her grandmother Inez Dill. She said the fact that her 26-year-old was sitting on her bike when she was shot saved her from more serious injury. Ms Davis was shot shortly before 11.30pm last Monday.Ms Dill said her granddaughter had recently arrived at the corner of Court and Elliott Streets when the shots were fired. A 23-year-old man was also grazed by a bullet.“She was sitting on her bike and talking to someone on her phone when the shooting started,” Ms Dill said. “If she had been standing up, it could have been a lot worse.”She said her granddaughter was on heavy painkillers and being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.“She’s been talking a little, but she’s in and out of consciousness,” Ms Dill said. “She’s hanging in there ... she’s young, it may turn out well. It’s going to take time.”The family live together at a Devonshire apartment where Ms Dill a nurse’s aide said she would care for Ms Davis once she was released from hospital.Police are treating the shooting as an attempted murder.
