Finding some silver linings in our doom and gloom economy

We’re about to enter the season of doom and gloom. Sure the weather is great but very soon things are expected to slow down, more businesses are expected to close and the word on the street is that its going to be a long, tough, cold winter. So what do we do? Well, we can start by living in a more sustainable way. More on this after the top 20.Up to #1 is I’m Into You by Jennifer Lopez featuring L’il Wayne. Tumbling to #2 is Rolling In The Deep by Adele.Up to #3 Chris Brown’s hit entitled She Ain’t You. Up to #4 is a former essential new tune, I Wanna Go, from Britney Spears. I’m delighted that she has revitalised her career. Long may it continue because she has too much talent to not be dropping hits. Falling to #5 is the hottest anthem on the planet Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock.Improving to # 6 is Put Your Hands Up (If You…) by Kylie Minogue. Motivation by Kelly Rowland featuring L’il Wayne falls to #7 this week. Slipping to #8 is Last Friday (TGIF) by Katy Perry. Sliding into the #9 slot is Give Me Everything by Pitbull, Neo, AfroJack & Nayer.Tumbling to #10 is Enrique Iglesias’ current hit Tonight I’m Loving You, a dance anthem with a punchy beat that makes you get up and dance, no matter where you are.Up to #11, is Wotless by Kes The Band and improving to # 12 is Bend Over by Machel Montano. Tumbling to #13 is the Latin/soca anthem Danza Kuduro, by Don Omar, Pit Bull, Lucenzo, DJ Laz and Qwote. Now some reggae. Climbing to #14 is Fly Away by Mavado. Improving to #15 is another hit by Mavado, this one entitled Pepper. Falling to #16 is Run the World (Girls) by Beyonce.Improving to # 17 is She Will by Lil Wayne featuring Drake. Climbing to #18 is Party by Beyonce featuring Andre 3000.Slipping to #19 is Just Can’t Get Enough by the Black Eyed Peas. Tumbling to #20 is Beautiful People by Chris Brown featuring Benny Benassi. Now back to this week’s topic what do we do now, whilst we wait for the economy to rebound? Well, those of us who have jobs must work hard to protect them, to make sure that our employers are successful, so that we can remain employed. Those persons who are unemployed should not despair but should train, retrain, cross-train, consider new professions and be willing to take any job for now, until something better comes along. It’s much easier to get a job when you already have one. It just creates a different and less desperate dynamic than when you’re unemployed. Trust me, I’ve been there and done that.I’m also thinking that whoever has a job needs to start saving for a rainy day.Well, it’s really raining now, but there are still things that people can do to save a penny. Ultimately we have to sustain spending to help the economy to improve, but you spend only where you have to spend. For instance, all non-essential spending should stop. Back in the day people did their own hair; nowadays everybody goes to hairdressers. Is that really necessary? If you have the cash then cool, but if you have to use a credit card to get a hairdo? Come on. Get real. Be smart. Then there’s the nail story, which I referenced a few weeks ago. If you have to use a credit card to get your nails done, please just don’t do it. It’s really not that serious. You will not die if you don’t have fancy nails. Highly successful people have plain nails. Some will say that this mentality will put hairdressers and nail technicians out of business. I say not so, because many people will not heed this advice and there are enough clients around to keep them all in business. Now trips. Bermudians like to travel. Many of us even travel when we can’t afford it. I’ve seen situations where people go on a trip but haven’t paid their rent, then look at the landlord strange when the landlord is asking for the rent and unhappy when it hasn’t been paid. All nonessential travel should be cancelled. If you don’t have to go, don’t go. Save your money. Buy Bermuda or do without. You will live.Instead of eating steaks, eat hamburger or chicken. Chicken is easier to digest anyway and doesn’t sit in your belly for several days, as does red meat. So in every dark cloud there is a silver lining. The benefit of this recession is that it should cause us to eat less and it might make us a little healthier we all know that Bermuda has a very high rate of obesity.Bermuda is a throwaway society. We throw away everything from husbands, to wives, to bikes, to stereos. Go to the Marsh Folly Dump, Tynes Bay Incinerator or the Airport Dump, and the stuff that you will see thrown away will baffle you.We throw away things that people in other countries would keep or would happily accept. We are victims of our own success.Hopefully the downturn will cause us to throw away less, keep things a little longer and generally be less wasteful. Bermuda currently generates more waste than the city of Manhattan! Yes, we do.If we create less waste, we will be treating our environment much better and generally living in a more sustainable way. That’s the moral of this story. We all need to live in a more sustainable manner. We used to grow a few vegetables. Well, we should start doing that again, which would lessen our reliance on the grocery stores. We could eat whatever we grew. We can start keeping chickens again. Lord knows there are enough of them around. We will get free eggs for breakfast and when its time to have some chicken, we can. These are just a few things that we can do to survive this recession and to live in a more sustainable way. Peace ... DJLT
