Poll shows economy is now top concern for residents
Almost three-quarters of people are unhappy with Government's handling of finances, according to a poll by Mindmaps. The economy has also displaced crime as the number one issue facing the Island for the first time since January 2009.It comes after Premier and Finance Minister Paula Cox's approval rating fell to 16 percent and favourability to 25 percent, just six months after they were 40 percent and 62 percent respectively. In the poll, carried out over a week ago, five percent of people said they were satisfied with Government's fiscal management; 74 percent said they were dissatisfied. And when asked to name the biggest issue facing Bermuda, 56 percent people said the economy or unemployment, with crime second on 22 percent. In each of the previous nine polls, crime came top of the list, with the Island reeling from ongoing gang violence. But as complaints over job losses and the price of essential goods continue, the economy came top among people of virtually all ages, whites, blacks, men and women.Education, housing, tourism and racism all came a long way behind with six percent or less each. When asked if they're confident in the direction of Bermuda's economy, five percent of people replied yes, the same figure as in the previous poll in April. However the number saying they are not confident climbed from 64 percent to 70 percent.Anxiety is highest among whites, with 85 percent saying they're not confident compared with 59 percent of blacks.Older people are also expressing more concerns, with 79 percent of seniors saying they're not confident, compared with 63 percent of the 18 to 34 age group. The Progressive Labour Party has seen its lead over the One Bermuda Alliance in the latest poll cut to two percentage points, with the PLP's performance approval rating down to ten percent and the OBA's at nine percent.Responding to the economy results yesterday, Shadow Economy Minister Craig Cannonier said: “It is clear from the latest poll results that a vast majority of Bermudians have lost faith in the Government's handling of the economy.“What they want is stronger, steadier, more confident leadership. And why shouldn't they? They sense the Government has no plan to get the Island on the path to recovery.“And they know that if its Ministers had been more careful with the public purse and willing to heed the warnings of recession, Bermuda's Government would be in a much stronger position today to help suffering families.“We in the One Bermuda Alliance are keen to get this Island back on track and working again. I urge people to watch and listen to us in the days and weeks ahead.“Within our ranks are people with proven skills and experience in financial and economic matters. Together we will speak out with ideas and solutions to get this economy moving forward. That means an economy that generates opportunities, jobs and belief in a more secure future. That's what Bermudians want, that's what Bermuda needs and that is what we will help to bring about.”Shadow National Security Minister Michael Dunkley reacted to the poll showing crime is the number two concern, saying: “The threat to our way of life from crime, specifically gang violence, has not lessened despite the fact that economic pressures are more on the minds of people today.“The police have made some inroads in recent months, and we support them in their work, but until the Government comes forward with a clear, comprehensive plan to deal with the crisis the violence will continue and spread.“This means addressing the underlying causes that give rise to gang life and violence. It is a major challenge for Bermuda, but one we cannot shirk and pass on to others or simply hope will go away.“Until the Government steps up to the plate on this, there will be no meaningful change on the crime front. This is what a Government is supposed to do, not the opposition, not concerned citizens, but the people who were elected to actually govern.”In a statement the PLP said: "It is understandable that our people continue to be focused on the condition of the economy and its impact on families and businesses."The economy is always first and foremost. That is why Government's policy response continues to be focused on saving jobs and providing incentives for job creation."Through tax concessions, the PLP Government has preserved more than 38,000 jobs in our economy."Most Bermudians have remained in circumstances where they can meet their daily, weekly and monthly obligations because we have helped to sustain their jobs.“The PLP government is demonstrating its commitment to our country by ensuring employment opportunities for Bermudians and retraining Bermudians where necessary. The results may not be immediate in all situations, but everyday there will be more successes.“The PLP government will continue to build on these successes and consequently build a brighter future for our country."The telephone poll of 400 registered voters took place between June 26 and July 3 and has a margin of error of 4.9 percent.Useful websites: www.mindmaps.bm, www.plp.bm, www.oba.bm
