UBP will encourage renewable energy source usage

Party Chairman Shawn Crockwell introduces UBP Leader Michael Dunkley during the UBP's platform release at St. Paul AME Church in Hamilton yesterday.

The United Bermuda Party plans to spend $10 million on saving open spaces across Bermuda and also want to encourage the use of renewable energy sources.

Its manifesto came out yesterday and the party said it would establish a Save Open Spaces trust and contribute $10 million to preserve and protect the environment through the purchase of key open spaces.

They added that they planned to ensure that Special Development Orders were issued only in cases "of true national interest, a position which must be clearly articulated and discussed by the community".

They also pledged to:

• Update the ten-year Bermuda Development Plan, which was due in 2002.

• Eliminate licensing fees for electric and hybrid vehicles and reduce fees on small, class A cars.

• Eliminate duty on energy-saving products such as compact fluorescent bulbs.

• Reduce land tax on homes or businesses that incorporate solar or photovoltaic energy-generating systems.
