Impaired driver in high-speed chase
A 23-year-old man admitted to driving while impaired when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.
The court heard from Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess that on March 8, Nelson Tucker of Alexandra Road, Devonshire, was seen by Police driving recklessly at 3.30 a.m.
When officers signalled for Tucker to pull over, he refused and led Police on a high-speed chase which ended with Tucker falling off his cycle near Shelton Road. Tucker attempted to run off but Police where able to stop him.
They noticed the smell of alcohol and asked him if he had been drinking.
He told Police: "I had a few shots. Let me call my brother, he will fix this."
He was then taken to Hamilton Police Station where his blood alcohol level was tested. His blood was found to have 247 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80 mg in 100 ml of blood.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $800. He was also given 10 demerit points and disqualified from driving all vehicles for 12 months.
