The number of active cases of Covid-19 has jumped to 184 as the Ministry of Health last night confirmed another 34 cases of the virus in Bermuda.

The new cases – from among 1,191 test results received by the Ministry – included one case imported by a resident who returned to the island on a March 19 flight from New York and 15 that were the result of local transmission with a known contact.

The sources of the other 18 cases are still under investigation.

The Ministry said all of the active cases are under public health monitoring with no patients in hospital.

The seven-day average of our real-time reproduction number is above 1, and Bermuda’s current country status is still “Sporadic Cases”.

Bermuda has added 125 cases in just four days, with the health ministry previously saying the majority are the UK variant, which is believed to be more virulent than the original Covid-19 virus. Earlier this week, the ministry also said one third of those infected were children.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, last night emphasised the need for those who have been told to quarantine to follow instructions and remain home.

She said: “I realise I may sound like a broken record, but this needs to be repeated often.

“Persons in quarantine are required to stay home for 14 days, and separate themselves from others within their household – particularly those at high risk of catching the virus – monitor their health, and follow public health guidelines.

“The more you circulate, the more chances the virus gets to circulate. When you isolate you decrease the opportunity for this virus to spread.”

Ms Wilson said those who are in quarantine must not go to social engagements, their offices or other public places.

She added: “Non-essential visitors must not enter the home. For children in quarantine, the child’s main caregivers and close contacts within the home, who cannot separate from the child must also remain at home.

“Other household members, including brothers and sisters, who can separate from a child in quarantine within the home are not required to remain at home unless your child is experiencing Covid-19 symptoms or has a positive Covid-19 test.

“Again we are reminding people going to get vaccinated to wear appropriate face masks – no neck gaiters or scarves.”
