Lawyer continues family tradition
and also became one of the Island's few husband and wife legal duos.
Yogarani Horseman was called to the Bar in a ceremony in Supreme Court last week before Puisne Judge Norma Wade.
Lawyer Richard Hector, who moved the motion, told the Court that Mrs. Horseman was fulfilling her father's dream of having his daughter become a lawyer.
"Her father was an attorney and he dreamed of all three of his daughters becoming lawyers,'' he said. "And that dream has come true.'' Mrs. Horseman, the youngest of three daughters, was born and raised in Singapore.
The trilingual lawyer -- who is fluent in Chinese, Hindi and English -- came to Bermuda in March, 1996 after becoming a member of Middle Temple in England.
She did her pupillage at Hector, Dwyer and Associates, where she will continue her career.
Lawyer Mark Pettingill said the firm thought Mrs. Horseman was "the best thing since sliced bread'' and welcomed his "right arm'' to the Bar.
During her first address to the Court, Mrs. Horseman thanked the firm and its lawyers and expressed special thanks to Mr. Pettingill.
"I owe you a debt of gratitude,'' she said. "He is one of the most encouraging figures in my life.'' After thanking her "Bermuda family'', Mrs. Horseman paid tribute to her family in Singapore who could not attend yesterday's ceremony.
Shortly after her arrival in Bermuda, she married lawyer Richard Horseman and with last week's ceremony, the pair became one of the few husband and wife duos in Bermuda.
Mr. Horseman welcomed "my wife, friend and fellow colleague'' and called her an "intellectual heavyweight'' when it came to the law.
