BA continues fight to avoid strike

A court injunction launched by British Airways to prevent cabin crew from striking over Christmas will continue today.

The airline apologised to customers for the uncertainty the strike threat had caused in a statement released yesterday.

"We are disappointed it has not been possible to complete the court hearing today as we had hoped to give our customers some clarity about flights booked in the prospective strike period," said a spokesman.

"We fully understand customers' anxieties, especially given the time of year involved. Clearly this is not a situation of our making. We are still hopeful of a positive outcome for our customers. We thank them for their patience and understanding and will make further announcements as soon as possible."

A 12-day strike is planned starting December 22 which could ruin the holiday plans of up to a million BA customers including several Bermuda residents.

The airline operates the only direct flight from Bermuda to the United Kingdom, providing service six days a week to Gatwick Airport.

Unite, the union that represents BAs cabin crew, threatened to strike after the airline imposed new working arrangements and pay changes last month.

A subsequent ballot of approximately 12,500 cabin crew found 92.5 percent in favour of industrial action in response.

A statement released this week by Unite said: "If British Airways want to get Christmas back on schedule, and values its relations with its own core employees, it will now take up our offer: Suspend the imposition of contractual changes and we will suspend the strike.

"That is the choice a pause for peace or madhouse macho management."
