in the Devonshire North seat left vacant by the late Progressive Labour Party leader Frederick Wade.

And the National Liberal Party will hold a Press conference tomorrow to announce its candidate for the by-election.

Sen. Scott's name was among those circulating shortly after Mr. Wade's death last month.

But yesterday, having recently returned from a Carribbean Union of Teachers conference in Barbados, he told The Royal Gazette : "I am in no way a candidate for Devonshire North.

"I'm not interested in Devonshire North and I have not been approached by anyone about running there.'' As of last week Thursday, five people had put themselves forward as candidates for the PLP in Devonshire North.

The party's public relations officer Paula Cox, who is understood to be favoured by PLP stalwarts, party activist Rolf Commissiong, and former United Bermuda Party candidate Rodney Smith all made their pitches for the seat at a Devonshire North branch meeting.

PLP Sen. Terry Lister and former Hamilton West MP Julian Hall have both declared themselves, but both were off the Island at the time of the meeting.

The by-election must be called by October 13, two months after the vacancy arose but cannot be held any earlier than 28 days after a writ by Premier David Saul authorising it is drawn up.

Dr. Saul said yesterday he had received advice from Registrar General Marlene Christopher on various possible dates for the by-election and he expected to consult with Opposition Leader Jennifer Smith by the end of next week on the most suitable date.

Meanwhile, the NLP is expected to announce its candidate tomorrow and it is expected to be a "a retired insurance man in his late 50s''.

Party chairman Charles Jeffers, who dispelled rumours that he would be running himself, refused to identify the man.
