Harbour Road completion date postponed for fourth time
Repairs on a collapsed section of Harbour Road in Warwick have been extended until mid-April after missing repeated deadlines, the Ministry of Public Works said today.
A ministry spokesman said the four months of construction between Burnt House Hill and Tamarind Vale Street were further delayed due to inclement weather and “the inability to source local materials”.
He added that an additional 50 feet of road in the same area was determined to be in need of repairs and that new construction methods which required staff training had further delayed its completion.
The extension came after Belco started trench work on Middle Road in Warwick earlier this month as part of a joint effort with the Government to move power lines and other utilities underground.
The ministry spokesman said that it would continue to coordinate with the Belco team to minimise traffic disruption and ensure alternative routes.
The section of Harbour Road under construction should be avoided by motorists and Middle Road should instead be used by a detour.
Emergency repairs were started on the waterside lane of Harbour Road after it collapsed into the sea late last year.
The work was first expected to be completed by December 18, but the timeline was pushed back to the end of January.
The deadline was further extended to mid-February, then to the end of March, due to poor weather conditions and difficulty sourcing materials.
The public works ministry also identified another 50 feet of waterside wall on Harbour Road in need of repairs – this time between Highwood Lane and Lovers Lane in Paget – on March 14.
Questions on the Harbour Road lane closure can be answered by Tina Beer-Searle, the civil engineer for the Ministry of Public Works, at 501-3044.
