Women’s workshop to be held on personal safety and self-defence

The Women’s Resource Centre is hosting an awareness workshop next week giving women tips on personal safety and self-defence.The seminar is part of a series, which started earlier this summer, aiming to proactively empower women.Others have included topics such as domestic violence and sexual assault, self esteem, immigration matters for non-Bermudian women and mothers parenting sons. The “Personal Safety Tips & Self Defence” workshop will be held at the Charities House on Point Finger Road in Paget on Monday at 6pm.A representative from the Bermuda Police Service will be guest speaking, while trainers from the Bermuda Aikikai School have partnered with the centre to “bring a complete, empowering workshop to the public”.They will cover topics such as: safety at home, in the workplace, social events, accessing parking lots & vehicles and cyberspace.Sherrie Outerbridge, of the Centre, said it was important for women to tap into their intuitive powers in order to better protect themselves from harm’s way.“The first line of self-defence is ‘awareness’, and true self-defence begins long before any actual physical contact.“The physical reaction should be the last reaction. The knowledge to use this discipline, appropriately, is a valuable resource.”She said everyone had the gift of ‘intuition’, though women were particularly intuitive.“We must learn to heed our intuition as it is a powerful tool that should be trusted and used to its full advantage.“If a situation and /or a person does not ‘feel ‘safe, chances are, you are right. Avoid the negative by removing yourself from that place and/or person. “The workshop costs $25 per person.
