Fashionable despite the breezy conditions
Since starting the ‘Fashion On The Street’ column late last year, we’ve been on the hunt each week for stylish people strolling through Hamilton.
Each week is different — and while some days the city seems to be teeming with stylish people, other weeks we have to search a little harder.
Thankfully this week proved to be a breeze — physically and metaphorically. As the winds continued to wage on, locals still appeared to be looking their best.
We managed to chat with four well dressed individuals to find out what inspired their style and what they hoped their clothes spoke about them.
“I hope my style shows that I’m put together and classy,” said Shelby Rodrigues. “And maybe that I am comfortable and down to earth and approachable.
“I definitely think fashion communicates a lot about a person. If you’re wearing exercise clothing, it comes off that you interested in health and fitness. Or if you are in a suit and tie, it signals that you work in an office.”
The 22-year-old student said she tends to find a lot of fashion inspiration on Pinterest, Instagram pages and magazines as well.
“I might find something like a picture of a blazer and a cute top and see what I have in my closet that looks similar and then try it out,” she said.
Kanti Furbert, 37, said: “I hope my clothes say classy. They say the first impression is always the lasting impression, so it’s important to try and look your best.”
Mr Furbert tends to buy and wear what he likes, but will also splurge on timeless fashion items rather than trends.
“I don’t really even think about what I’m wearing,” he said. “I just grab what I like and put it on. I have my own style, but I guess I follow a mix of hip hop and pop culture.”
Nurse Latoya Ible said she hopes her clothes communicate how much she likes fashion.
She usually picks what she’s going to wear depending on the weather and if she feels like “dressing up or down”. “I also get inspiration from sites like Instagram. I look at pictures and like different styles,” she said.
Alexis Bean, who works in the reinsurance industry, said she likes to keep her style simple and tends to wear a lot of neutral colours.
“I went to university in New York so black is my favourite colour for fashion,” she said. “I also like cream and beige, that’s pretty much all I wear.
“When it comes to my inspiration, I guess I just follow what I see in the street and what other girls are wearing. Then I just tune it down so that it fits my confidence level.”
She said she hopes her style communicates that she is classy, but also fun. “If it doesn’t I guess I will have to keep working on it,” she added.
