Twenty20 plagued by player shortage

Two clubs couldn’t raise enough players to field a full side and another two forfeited their games for the same reason as the beleagured Twenty20 League continued to cause the Bermuda Cricket Board more early season problems on Saturday.Southampton Rangers were able to beat Warwick with just nine players while Young Men’s Social Club got what they deserved a 62-run thrashing by St. David’s after only managing to muster nine players.Devonshire fell one player short of the minimum number to field a team seven and forfeited to Flatts.Leg Trappers, with several players included in the national rugby team, had to pull out for their game against Bailey’s Bay at Sea Breeze Oval.The rugby team travel to the Bahamas on Wednesday for the Caribbean ChampionshipsRangers got past Warwick with a 15-run win at Southampton Oval. They were bowled out for 103 as Curtis Jackson top scored with 17 while Damiko James took three wickets to restrict the home side.In reply, however, Warwick couldn’t make a serious challenge. Big-hitting Lionel Cann and Dwayne Adams both scored 15 as the side ended on 88 for eight.Christian Gibbons and Alex Dore took two wickets each for Rangers.For the champions, it was a much-needed boost, not only to boost their confidence but to let their Western Counties rivals know which team still reigns supreme.“There wasn’t any pressure and we had nine men so it was pleasing to see,” said Rangers’ Dion Stovell. “We knew that once we got was through Lionel, as a good batsman he is and he didn’t even trouble the scoreboard, we knew the game was over.“So all in all it was a pretty good game. I have to praise Warwick youngsters, they bowled real good so it was unlucky for them.”Western Stars beat Somerset Bridge by eight wickets to continue their fine run of form.Winning the toss and electing to bat, Bridge scored 92 for nine in their 20 overs with Tristan Smith and Dwayne Simons both scoring 16, while Swayne Campbell took three wickets and skipper Brian Hall grabbed two.In reply, Stars scored 98 for two in 16 overs, wicketkeeper Temiko Wilson top scoring with 41 and McLaren Lowe adding an unbeaten 31.Noel Woods and Kaya Robinson claimed one wicket each.St David’s kept their train running along steadily, cruising past Young Men’s Social Club.The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, piling up 150 for five in 20 overs with Cup Match player Chris Foggo leading the way with 40.Ryan Shephard was the chief wicket taker for Social Club, helping himself to two wickets.In reply Ryan Tyrell scored 21 but shorthanded Social Club were bowled all out for 88 in 18.5 overs. Fiqre Crockwell claimed two wickets.The Evening League Select rolled over PHC with a five-wicket victory at PHC field.Colin Stewart scored 42 and Delray Rawlins added 32 to lead PHC to a total of 162 for six while Lionel Whal was the top bowler for the ELS as he grabbed two wickets.In reply, Craig Smith scored 59 not out as the ECL reached their target with seven balls to spare. Stewart and Charles Symons both collected two wickets.
